From Highway 24, Trailhead at Vicksburg approximately eight miles west of U.S. highway 24 on Forest Road #120, Clear Creek Road. Clear Creek is about 19 miles south of Leadville or 14 miles north of Buena Vista, Colorado. Forest Road #120 is graveled and sometimes rough but satisfactory for most vehicles.
Location Information
Vicksburg served mainly as a mining camp for the numerous mines in the Clear Creek drainage area. Some of the most famous were the Swiss Boy Mine, Tasmania Mines, Banker Mine and Fortune Mine, which mainly produced silver and copper ore. At one time Vicksburg claimed 250 residents, a school, post office, saloon, a blacksmith, two hotels and a boarding house. Despite all this, it did not remain active for long. Today, a few buildings remain and are used as recreational residences during the summer. One cabin serves as a museum, which is maintained by the Clear Creek Historical Society.
