From Yampa, Travel S/SW on Routt County Rd #7 approximately 7 miles to FDR 900. Travel another 7 miles on FDR 900 to Bear Lake Campground. The trailhead is located across the road from the entrance to the campground.
Location Information
The Mandall Lakes trail is located in the Bear River area of the Flat Tops, southwest of Yampa. The trail begins opposite the entrance to Bear Lake Campground. The trail climbs up along Mandall Creek, enters the Flat Tops Wilderness, and then passes Slide Mandall and Black Mandall Lakes. The trail then makes a steep climb to Mandall Pass, at an elevation of 11,960 feet, to the end of the maintained trail. Some of the lakes in this area provide good fishing.Remaining in the alpine tundra, the hiker can head south toward the Devils Causeway and the East Fork Trail #1119. There is no trail across this area and a good topographic map is recommended. Once reaching the East Fork Trail, the hiker can return to Forest Road 900 and Stillwater Reservoir by going south; or go north into the Williams Fork drainage. High winds, cool temperatures, lack of oxygen, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms can make travel difficult. Those using this route should be aware of rapidly changing weather conditions.
