Directions
From Santa Margarita, Travel Southeast on Pozo Road for about 18 miles to the junction with Forest Road 29S01. Turn right (east) and drive two miles and turn southeast onto FS 30S02. You will reach a locked gate and must begin hiking here due to road closures. Hike about 2 miles to American Road (FS 30S04) and hike on to the American Campground and trailhead.
Location Information
GENERAL INFORMATION: A 5 mile hike of moderate difficulty. The trail starts in the oak woodlands of the American Canyon Campground. It gradually climbs 1700 feet along brush-covered mountain slopes. Passing through scattered groves of oak and pine, it ends in the shady Pine Springs trail camp. Views of the surrounding La Panza mountains and Carrizo Plains are breathtaking.
Note: Road to American Canyon open only 6 weeks during general deer rifle season. (2nd Saturday in August through 3rd Sunday in September).
