The first 1.5 miles of the trail are level hiking over the original grade of the Great Northern Railroad. Next, the trail enters the Henry M. Jackson Wilderness Area before reaching Lake Valhalla. After the lake, the trail heads north to Lake Janus via Union Gap. Next, the trail passes Pear Lake, continues through Cady Pass, Lake Sally Ann, Dishpan Gap then leaves the Skykomish Ranger District at Meander Meadow. The meadow marks the entrance to Glacier Peak Wilderness.
