From Carson, The Big Hollow trail is accessed from the Observation Trail #132 and Forest Roads 64 and 58. Follow the Wind River Highway (County Road 30) north from Carson to Forest Road 64. Follow 64 north to 58. Follow 58 approximately 2-3 miles south to the Observation Peak Trailhead, located at the northern end of Observation Trail, to the north of the Trapper Creek Wilderness.
Location Information
Big Hollow Trail begins on Observation Trail #132 at Berry Camp, a small primitive campsite in the northern portion of the Trapper Creek Wilderness. Dropping 400 feet in approximately one mile, the Big Hollow Trail #158 meets a fork of Hollow Creek that should be forded with care. Continuing downhill two miles, the trail intersects Dry Creek Trail #194. In June, a 2-foot water crossing through Big Hollow Creek provides a challenge for trail visitors, with a swift current, so proceed with caution! After the water crossing, the trail terminates in about 1/2 mile on Forest Route 64.
