Location Information
Daniel Webster-Scout Trail was cut in 1933 by a group of scouts from the Daniel Webster Council. The trail starts south of the campground into a mixed forest along a fairly wide well-worn path. The trail crosses the Hayes Copp Ski Trail and heads northwest near Culhane Brook. The trail then heads southwest and begins to ascend the ridges of Mt. Madison. At about 2 miles the mixed forest turns into a solid evergreen forest. Shortly, the trail becomes steeper with switchbacks easing the climb. At about 3 miles the trail reaches the tree line where the rocky path eases a bit before its last steep climb to Osgood Junction, 4,822 feet. From here, you may retrace your steps back to the campground road or head south onto Osgood Trail to Great Gulf Trail to Great Gulf Link Trail (6 miles). This loop (9.5 miles) terminates just a little ways south on the campground road where Daniel Webster-Scout Trail began. Trails north and west of Osgood Junction lead to numerous other forest trails, many having heights exceeding 5,000 feet. If you take Osgood Junction Trail northwest, you will reach Mt. Madison about .5 mile down the trail. The elevation at Mt. Madison is 5,366 feet offering fabulous area views.
