From Fairplay, Michigan Creek Campground is located approximately 23 miles northeast of the town of Fairplay, Colorado. Visitors may reach this campground by taking State Highway 285 north from Fairplay 17 miles to the town of Jefferson. Then drive west on County Road 35 for approximately 3 miles to County road 54. Travel northwest on County Road 54 for approximately 3 miles to the campground. To reach the French Pass Trailhead continue traveling on County Road 54 for approximately 2.5 miles.
Location Information
The French Pass Trail provides access to the Continental Divide and a variety of recreation opportunities. The trail is not always well defined or signed. From the southern trailhead it leads up the French Creek drainage, beginning at approximately 10,520'. Within 4.5 miles users reach French Pass, elevation 12,045'. The trail continues into the Arapaho National Forest eventually meeting French Gulch Road. French Pass is the Continental Divide crossing between Bald Mountain and Mt. Guyot. The view to the south walking toward the trailhead from the pass is of South Park and the Tarryall Mountains. This trail is not recommended for winter use due to avalanche potential. Water is available at Michigan Creek Campground and in the backcountry from French Creek.
