From Bailey, From Bailey drive south on Forest Developed Road 543 a.k.a. Park County Road 68. At the Wellington Lake entrance 543 bears left (east) toward Buffalo Creek - take the right fork instead and continue south across the Wellington Lake Dam. (This southbound road is now Forest Road 560.) Continue 6 more miles to a sign indicating the turnoff to Wigwam Trail. Total distance from Bailey to this turnoff is slightly over 18 miles. At the turnoff turn right (west) and drive 1.3 miles to the parking lots.
Location Information
This trail provides a less-crowded alternative to the Goose Creek Trailhead. The trail accesses the east side of the Lost Creek Wilderness Area by following the Wigwam Creek drainage to an open meadow called Wigwam Park - a distance of 3.5 miles. The meadow has a number of beaver ponds and flat area suitable for camping. In Wigwam Park the trail intersects the north end of the Goose Creek Trail, 612, and the south end of the Rolling Creek Trail, 663. From Wigwam Park the Wigwam Trail continues in a westerly direction for an additional distance of 6.6 miles to the Lost Park Campground. Since the trail lies within a Wilderness Area all bicycles and motorized vehicles are prohibited. This narrative describes the first 4.2 miles of the Wigwam Trail to the Rolling Creek Trail junction in Wigwam Park. From the parking areas follow the signs a short distance on an old logging road. Near the stream there is sign on your right marking the beginning of the trail. The trail heads generally northwest along Wigwam Creek. The grade is fairly steady ascent of 1,340' in 3.5 miles. The last mile to the park has several short, steep, rocky sections of trail. After 3 miles you will pass a sheer vertical rock wall that comes down to the right edge of the trail. At mile 3.5 you will reach the Goose Creek Trail junction in Wigwam Park. The Wigwam Trail continues west to the north of some beaver ponds. The Rolling Creek Trail junction sign is at mile 4.2. These 2 trail junctions are clearly marked on the Windy Peak Quad Map revised in 1984.
