From Graeagle, Travel south on Hwy. #89 for approximately 1.25 miles and turn right onto Primary Forest Route #24. Follow this road for approximately 3 miles and turn right onto the road to Gray Eagle Lodge. The trailhead is on the road to Gray Eagle Lodge. Follow the Smith Lake Trail for 2.5 miles and it will connect with the Mt. Elwell Trail.
Location Information
The Mt. Elwell Trail (12E22) is a moderately difficult 4.8 hike at an elevation of 6,700 feet. This trail leaves the Smith Lake Trail and climbs steadily for 3 miles to Mt. Elwell (7,818 feet.) It descends 0.7 miles to the Long Lake Trail junction and continues another 1.1 miles to the PCT and a 4 WD trail. This trail is strenuous and receives light use.
