From Lone Pine, Follow direction to the Whitney Portal Campground, located west of Lone Pine.
Location Information
From the Whitney Portal Campground,the 4.65 mile Whitney Portal National Recreation Trail climbs 2,300 feet along the Long Pine Drainage to Whitney Portal. From Whitney Portal at 8,365 feet to Mount Whitney's 14,495 foot summit, the 10.7 mile Mt. Whitney Trail provides hikers the satisfaction of climbing the highest peak in the Sierra Nevada Range and the contiguous United States.

Because of the trail's popularity, a quota/reservation system is in effect during the main use season. Contact the Mt. Whitney Ranger District for information.
