From Lake City, Drive north on Highway 149 toward Gunnison. About one half mile past the town limits, turn left, toward the old Lake City IOOF Cemetery, on to Balsam Drive. Follow this road and turn right just in front of the cemetery entrance and park here. The trailhead is approximately one half mile past the cemetery, so continue walking on Balsam Drive to reach it. Larson Lakes are four miles from the trailhead via the Larson Lakes Trail (follow signs to Thompson Lake).
Location Information
Larson Lakes lie northwest of Lake City and southeast of the Uncompahgre Wilderness. To access the lakes hike northwest from the old Lake City Cemetery four miles on Larson Lakes Trail, 236. (The hike to Larson Lakes is of moderate difficulty.) Larson Lakes are part of the upper Larson Creek drainage. Fishing for brook and rainbow trout is often good in these waters. The lakes lie at an approximate elevation of 11,200 feet. They often do not thaw until mid July.
