From Lake City, Take Colorado Highway 149 north toward Gunnison about ten miles. Turn left onto the Alpine Forest Access Road, 868. Take that road about five miles past the Alpine Plateau Road, 867, to Big Blue Campground (approximately nine miles from the highway). Big Blue Creek stretches for several miles north and south of the campground.
Location Information
The headwaters of Big Blue Creek lie near 12,500 feet in the Uncompahgre Wilderness. The first twelve miles (approximate length) of Big Blue Creek flow northward through the wilderness and can be accessed from Big Blue Trail, 232. North of the wilderness area it can be accessed from Alpine Trail, 225, for about three miles. After leaving the lands of the Uncompahgre Forest, Big Blue Creek flows northward to contribute to the waters of the Gunnison River. Slide Lake, a natural lake formed by a rock slide across Big Blue Creek in the 1940s, lies five miles south of Big Blue Trailhead in the Uncompahgre Wilderness. It offers good fishing for brook and rainbow trout in early summer and fall. The creek itself clear and cold. Brook trout are plentiful in this stream, although they are relatively small.
