Location Information
Fishing on the Hahns Peak/Bears Ears District is dispersed throughout the district. There are several hundred miles of fishable streams and rivers and many lakes and reservoirs. These areas provide varied fishing experiences, ranging from roadside fishing of stocked waters to backcountry fishing for native fish. Several lakes and reservoirs are accessible by road but the majority are accessible only by foot or horseback. All fishing in Colorado is subject to the rules and regulations of the Colorado Division of Wildlife. Remember, permission must be obtained from the landowner to fish on private land. Some streams and lakes in the Steamboat Springs area include: *Elk River - Portions of the Elk River which flow through private lands have been posted. Fishing access is available on State and National Forest land.
*Walton Creek - Rabbit Ears Pass area.
*Fishhook Creek - accessed by Trail #1101, the Wyoming Trail.
*Hahns Peak Lake - north of Clark and Steamboat Lake, electric or manual powered boats only.
*Harrison Creek - south of US HWY. 40 and Rabbit Ears Pass
*King Solomon Creek - North of Hahns Peak and Farwell Mountain. Backcountry and roadside fishing.
*Middle Fork of the Snake River - north of Columbine on Forest Roads 550, 500 and 129. Backcountry and roadside fishing. Some streams and lakes in the Craig and Hayden areas include: *California Park - north of Hayden, tributaries of Elkhead Creek.
*Slater Park - north of Hayden and California Park, tributaries of Slater Creek.
*Freeman Reservoir - north of Craig, approximately 40 acres, no motor powered boats.
*Willow Creek - northwest corner of district, headwaters on National Forest, accessed by Forest Road 109.
*Slater Creek Tributaries on north side of Bears Ears and Black Mountain - mostly small creeks, some offer fair fishing, many accessed by Bears Ears Trail #1144.
