Directions
From Highway 4, Travel approximately five miles to the south end of Highland Lake Road. The road is rugged but with care most vehicles can handle it.
Location Information
The Hermit Valley Trailhead, located near Highland Creek Canyon and the rugged mountains that form its eastern side, most notably Hiram Peak, Airola Peak, and the Dardanelles. From the trailhead, follow the trail for as long as you please along Highland Creek- just remember that coming out will be all uphill. After about 1 1/2 miles of steep descent along the creek the trail and the canyon level out.

There are also numerous options available for overnight and extended trips. Several good spots for overnight camping exist along the Highland Creek Trail, which is the main artery of the trail system for this area. Popular destinations include Hiram Meadow, Spicer Reservoir, and Lake Alpine. Variations include the Weiser Trail from Hiram Meadow to the junction of the Milk Ranch Trail which will return travelers to the Highland Lakes Road about 2 miles north of the Highland Lakes Trailhead. This loop can be done in two or three days depending on the desired pace.
