Staunton River State Park is on a small peninsula known as "The Fork" which lies between the Staunton River and the Dan River. Research indicates that the Occoneechee Indians inhabited this area as far back as the 13th century.This peaceful south side Virginia park is a nice weekend getaway for families and fishermen alike. Bass, bluegill, crappie and perch are plentiful. It has a large swimming pool, picnic and concession area, shore fishing, two boat launches, shady camp sites, tidy cabins, visitor center depicting the history of tobacco farming, amphitheater offering interpretative programs, tennis courts, wonderful playground and over 10 miles of multi-use trails. Tip: Be sure to carry along plenty of bug repellent.
Staunton River State Park offers a newly refurbished swimming pool, concession area, fishing opportunities, boat ramps, hiking trails, environmental education programs and more.
Occoneechee State Park is also located on Buggs Island Lake. It is approximately 45 minutes away via Rt. 344 north, right on U.S. 360 for 10-12 miles, then right on Rt. 92 for about 1 mile heading south on Rt. 15 for approximately 10 miles. The traveler will pass Prestwood Plantation, a local attraction. Annually this park accommodates many overnight South Boston Speedway fans and participants. South Boston Museum is also a popular attraction.
Virginia generally has mild winters and warm humid summers. The Piedmont Plateau area of the state has winter temperatures averaging above 36 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius). The state's summer temperatures have little variation. Piedmont Plateau generally experiences temperatures above 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26 Celsius). High humidity along with warm temperatures can be uncomfortable.
