A bird lovers delight, this northern Virginia park offers field, forest and wetland.In 1965, two bald eagle nests were spotted on the peninsula formed by Pohick Bay on the north, Belmont Bay on the south and the Potomac River on the east. As a result of these sightings, the Mason Neck Conservation Committee was formed. Concerned about development on the peninsula, they lobbied the state to purchase the property as a site for a state park. Within a few years, the Commonwealth of Virginia began purchasing this land that now boasts as having one of the East Coast's most active heron rookeries. The beautiful whistling swan and an assortment of ducks and other species of migrating and on-migrating birds call this park home.
Mason Neck provides picnicking, fishing, hunting, boating and a small boat launch. No swimming or overnight facilities are available. Popular interpretive programs include pond study, bird-watching, canoe trips, beach combing and eagle studies.
Three historic opportunities are within a few miles of Mason Neck State Park; Gunston Hall, Mount Vernon and Woodlawn Plantation.

The state's summer temperatures have little variation. The tidewater and eastern shore generally experience temperatures ranging from 76 to above 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26 Celsius). High humidity along with warm temperatures can be uncomfortable.
