Leesylvania was the ancestral home of Virginia's famous Fairfax and Lee Families. Rich in history, this park located along the spectacular Potomac River offers picnickers, hikers and fishermen plenty of recreation opportunity.Land for the park was donated in 1978 by Daniel Ludwig, a noted philanthropist. A national historical society, the Society of Lees of Virginia, was instrumental in securing the donation. Locally the area is known as Freestone Point, referring to the sandstone early settlers took from the property for building. Henry Lee III (Light Horse Harry) was born here at what was then Leesylvania Plantation in Colonial America. This Revolutionary War hero would later father the Confederate General Robert E. Lee of Civil War fame.
This park is conveniently located 20 miles south of Washington, D.C. Because of its close proximity to this major metropolitan area, it is used heavily during the weekends and slightly less during the weekdays. It has three miles of Potomac River frontage making this park popular with boaters. The park picnic area features a half mile of natural sand beach on the Potomac River. Swimming from the shore is not allowed. Fishing, sunbathing, picnicking and walking are allowed on the beach. A concession is open three seasons offering snacks, light groceries, gasoline and tackle. Interpretive programs include canoe tours, guided historic and nature walks. Children's fishing tournaments and Junior Ranger day camps are available.

High humidity along with warm temperatures can be uncomfortable.
