This lovely mountainous park received its name from Robert Douthat who in 1795 obtained the property through a land grant. This park is on the Virginia Landmark Register and the National Register of Historic Places. It lies between two massive mountain ridges in Virginia's Alleghany Highlands and is well known for its beautiful trout stocked lake and recreation facilities.The industrious Civilian Conservation Corps built this park and dedicated it on June 15, 1936. Visitors today still benefit from their meticulous construction. This park is known for its spectacular scenery with an elevation between 2,600 and 3,100 feet. Douthat is one of Virginia's most popular parks due to its rich history, a trout stocked fishing lake, swimming beach, fully equipped rustic cabins, waterfront campsites, popular lake view restaurant, interpretive programs, abundant wildlife and its fabulous 40 miles of wilderness hiking and biking trails that stretch into the neighboring national forest.
Douthat State Park is a neighbor to the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests. Private camping and a miniature golf course are minutes away. Within a short drive is Clifton Forge, famous for its arts and crafts. Two historic universities reside nearby as well, Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University. The historic Homestead resort is 30 minutes away.
Douthat visitors enjoy camping, lodging, restaurant dining, fishing, wading, swimming, interpretive programs, hiking, and mountain biking.

The mountainous Blue Ridge area has cold winter months with temperatures ranging from 36 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius) and dropping below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 Celsius). The state's summer temperatures have little variation. The summer mountainous Blue Ridge temperatures range from below 74 degrees Fahrenheit (23 Celsius) to 78 degrees Fahrenheit (26 Celsius).
