This is the Place Heritage Park consists of Old Deseret, a living historic village, that recreates a typical Utah Mormon community between 1847 and 1869. Visitors can experience a recreation of daily pioneer life in the adobe houses, shops, schools and churches of Old Deseret. Guides, dressed in period costume, conduct daily activities and share stories of pioneer lifestyles. This Is The Place Monument also lies within the park. Located south of Old Deseret Village, the monument was erected in 1947. It commemorates the 100th anniversary of the arrival of
Mormon pioneers to the Salt Lake Valley.The facilities at the heritage park consist of interpretive exhibits, a reconstructed Mormon village, picnic grounds, modern restrooms and drinking water.
Visitors to This Is The Place Heritage Park can view historic exhibits and structures and picnic on the grounds. Guided tours of Old Deseret are available from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The visitor center is open year round with audiovisual presentations and a knowledgeable staff.
This site lies at an elevation of 4,900 feet. The climate of the area is generally arid, as is the entire state of Utah. Winter temperatures are mild in Salt Lake City, when compared to that of the surrounding mountains. Snowfall is a common occurrence during the winter and a major source of water for the region. Summer temperatures can soar past 90 degrees F for much of July and August. Afternoon thunder showers often pass through the Salt Lake Basin cooling temperatures slightly. Visitors should be prepared with a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen in every season.
