The iron industry in Dickson County has been long silent, but the 3,782 acres that make up Montgomery Bell State Resort Park still show the signs of its presence. Near the remains of the Old Laurel Furnace, ore pits where men once scratched iron ore from the earth, lie quiet and abandoned. The hardwood forest, once heavily cut to clear farmland and to produce charcoal for the iron furnaces, has slowly regrown. Fox, squirrel, raccoon, opossum, deer and a wide variety of birds and wildflowers have returned with the forest, making Montgomery Bell a place of quiet natural beauty.Narrows of the Harpeth complex is a satellite area of Montgomery Bell State Park.
The restaurant at Montgomery Bell is part of the Inn and Conference Center. The restaurant seats up to 115 people and has a picturesque view of Lake Acorn.
New 6,000 sq. feet. conference facility with audio visual equipment, public address systems. A variety of configurations are available to suit every business need. Equipment available includes overhead projector, microphones, mic stands, flip charts, screen, sound system, marker boards, podium, lavaliere mics. Copying and Faxing services available.
The course was built in 1973 and then redesigned by designer Gary Roger Baird in 1988. In previous years, Golf Digest had recognized Montgomery Bell as one of the "Top 100 Public Course to Play". Hole #2, Par 5, 446 yards long is the Signature hole. This is a beautiful hole, with the fairways being lined with hardwood trees and the green protected by four bunkers. The course can stretch from 4961 yards to 6146 yards. The entire course is heavily wooded with an abundance of wildlife featuring deer, geese and wild turkey. Montgomery Bell is host every year in the spring to The Dogwood Classic.
Other points of interest are the Opryland Hotel, Nashville area, Historic Franklin and Harpeth. River.
Activities found at Montgomery Bell State Park include a fishing, boating, camping, hiking, playground, archery, horseshoes, softball fields, volleyball, exercise, equipment, basketball, tennis courts and electronic games.
Tennessee has a temperate climate with short, mild winters. The average annual snowfall for the state is 12 inches. Spring comes in early March bringing flowering trees and shrubs, and warmer weather. Spring temperatures average between 45 and 70 degrees. Summer's full force arrives in the region by mid May, bringing warm weather and higher humidity. The mountains of eastern Tennessee are a great place to escape the hot summer temperatures as the higher elevation cools the air slightly. Cool fall temperatures bring crisp air and brilliant fall colors. Mid to late October is a good time to visit the region to experience the fall foliage.
