Bordering the mighty Mississippi River, two-thirds of this 13,467-acre park are bottomland hardwood forests of large oak, cypress and tupelo.The park contains two lakes and many miles of hiking trails. The Meeman Museum and Nature Center is named for Edward J. Meeman, courageous conservation editor of Scripps-Howard newspapers who helped establish this park and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The park maintains a boat ramp on the Mississippi River. Deer, turkey, beaver and some 200 species of birds are abundant.
Nature Center is open from April 1-October 1 and the hours are 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Exhibits include live snakes, fish aquarium, stuffed animal exhibit, a "touch table" and a Native American exhibit.
Special programs at the center include making bird feeders and homemade ice cream, watching nature videos and taking pontoon boat rides.
Other nearby points of interest are the Memphis Pyramid, Beale Street and Graceland.
Hiking, camping, fishing, boating and other activities are available at this park. There are also numerous bicycle trails found throughout the park.
Tennessee has a temperate climate with short, mild winters. The average annual snowfall for the state is 12 inches. Spring comes in early March bringing flowering trees and shrubs, and warmer weather. Spring temperatures average between 45 and 70 degrees. Summer's full force arrives in the region by mid May, bringing warm weather and higher humidity. The mountains of eastern Tennessee are a great place to escape the hot summer temperatures as the higher elevation cools the air slightly. Cool fall temperatures bring crisp air and brilliant fall colors. Mid to late October is a good time to visit the region to experience the fall foliage.
