This beachfront park, rich in Native American history, was originally developed in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Its 1,255 acres include 11/2 miles of beach, a dense live oak forest and some of the tallest palmetto trees in the state. Visitors can observe life in the marsh and comb the beach for seashells and fossils while enjoying a stay in a cabin or at the beachfront campground. There are 5 two-bedroom/one bath cabins which can accommodate 6 people. The camping area has 64 sites which are oceanside while 33 sites are located near the salt marsh. 5 sites are walk-in tent sites. Enjoy surf fishing or fishing in the salt marsh for flounder, whiting, spot tail and other species. The Spanish Mound trail provides an easy 4 mile hiking loop. Two picnic shelters are available free on a first-come, first-served basis or reserved for a fee. Other facilities include a boat ramp and playground equipment.
This beachfront park offers camping, cabin rental, surf and marsh fishing, hiking, picnicking, and boating.
South Carolina generally has a temperate climate, with cool winters and warm, humid summers. Snow and freezing temperatures are possible in the winter at the higher elevations. Thunderstorms are possible throughout the year but most common in the spring and summer. Tropical storms occasionally strike the coast during the hurricane season.
