Whirlpool State Park is located 2 miles north of the Great Niagara Falls. The park has two levels of recreation opportunities. The upper level offers views of the mile-long rapids along with a children's playground and picnic area. The lower level descends into a gorge offering several trail choices and access to fishing waters. Viewing the waters from this park is interesting because it leaves the whirlpool at a right angle forming an elbow in the Niagara River. This park is open May through November, dawn to dusk.Whirlpool State Park has two observation levels for viewing the mile-long stretch of rapids. The upper level (street level) has many overlooks with spectacular views of the swirling waters, the whirlpool and the Niagara River Escarpment. Visitors picnic and children use the playground at this level. The lower (river level) is accessible by walking the 300 feet of trails and steps that descend into the gorge. This level has several nature trails and access for fishing. Viewing the waters from this park is interesting because it leaves the whirlpool at a right angle forming an elbow in the Niagara River. Visitors to Whirlpool State Park will enjoy viewing spectacular scenery along the Niagara River. Views are available from two levels. Biking, fishing, hiking, picnicking, a nature trail, children's playground, picnic pavilions and cross-country skiing are also enjoyed at this seasonal park.

It is important to note that this area receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Summer temperatures average around 72 degrees Fahrenheit (around 22 degrees Celsius). Precipitation in the region ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt.
