Stony Brook State Park's terrain comprises hilly woodlands, a deep gorge with rugged cliffs overlooking three waterfalls and fascinating rock formations. Day use and overnight facilities are offered year-round with seasonal limitations.

A variety of outdoor recreation amenities are available at this park. Visitors can hike the rim of the gorge or descend into the gorge. They may also play tennis while visiting the park or picnic or enjoy watching children swing at the playground. A campground offers showers, a dump station and an opportunity to relax in a beautiful outdoor environment.

Stony Brook State Park offers a swimming beach, hunting opportunities, a nature trail, picnic ground, tennis courts, children's playground, campground, hiking trails which are used as cross-country trails in winter, picnic pavilions and showers. Camping seasons runs from the first weekend in May to mid-October. All gorge trails close the Friday before Thanksgiving. Bow hunting for deer is permitted during season.

The Stony Brook State Park area experiences average January temperatures above 22 degrees Fahrenheit (above -6 degrees Celsius). It is important to note that this area receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Summer temperatures average around 72 degrees Fahrenheit (around 22 degrees Celsius). Precipitation in the region ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt.
