Located along the shores of Buckhorn Island, this park is the last vestige of what once was a great marshland. The park is a designated preserve land that does invite the public to use the land for rest, relaxation and education. Limited amenities are offered year-round. No restrooms.Buckhorn Island State Park is comprised of 895 acres of marsh, meadows and woods. It is the last vestige of once vast marshlands and meadows that bordered the Niagara River. Visitors are welcome to walk the nature trail, hike, fish and cross-country ski in the park. Currently, the park is undergoing restoration to re-establish wetland cover and water levels and increase the diversity of native flora and fauna. Part of the restoration plan includes increasing public access with more non-intrusive trails, overlooks, a bike path and parking facilities.
Buckhorn Island State Park offers a nature trail, bike path, hiking trails, fishing opportunities and cross-country skiing trails. No restrooms available.
The Buckhorn Island State Park area experiences average January temperatures above 22 degrees Fahrenheit (above -6 degrees Celsius). It is important to note that this area receives some of the heaviest snowfalls in the nation. Summer temperatures average around 72 degrees Fahrenheit (around 22 degrees Celsius). Precipitation in the region ranges from less than 36 inches to approximately 40 inches of rain and snowmelt.
