The Coal Camp Interpretive Trail winds through the ruins of the Sugarite coal camp. Coal mining in the area provided an important economic boost to the region and state. The visitor center provides information about the coal camp and the area's history. Located near Raton, New Mexico, the park is comprised of 3,600 acres of land in addition to the 120 acre lake. Park elevation is 7,800 feet.
An extended cliff of basaltic rock columns, often referred to as "caprock" is the dominant geologic feature at the park. About 12 million years ago, broad sheets of molten lava erupted from a nearby volcano, forming layers of basalt rock 10-100 feet thick.
The Coal Camp Interpretive Trail winds through the ruins of the Sugarite coal camp. Visitors can also fish and boat (electric motors only), observe the plentiful wildlife, hike scenic trails, camp and picnic.
Technical rock climbers have discovered the park. Bolting is not permitted, and climbers are asked to check in first at the visitor center.
Cross-country ski conditions are excellent most years, particularly on the Opportunity Trail in the northern part of the park.
Annual precipitation is 15 inches. Summer temperatures range from lows around 52 to highs around 80. Winter temps range from lows of 20 degrees to highs around 46.
