This national historic landmark is the boyhood home of Franklin Pierce, 14th President of the United States. Circa 1804.Franklin Pierce (1804-1869) served as the 14th President of the United States. He served during a very turbulent period in our nation which eventually led to the Civil War. Supporting the Compromise of 1850, he is quoted "if the compromise measures are not firmly maintained, the Constitution will be trampled in the dust." This stance led to presidential victory. Today he is remembered as brilliant, handsome, courageous and the youngest man, age 48, to be elected to the nation's highest office at the time.
Guided historical interpretative programs are held from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. Daily programs are available during the months of July and August. There is a $2.50 entrance fee for those over 18 years of age. Restrooms are on-site.
Winter can be cold with average temperatures ranging around 19 degrees Fahrenheit. The cold temperatures humidity bring heavy, water-laden snow to all parts of the state. Spring begins in mid-March and lasts through May. This time of the year is referred to as mud season in the mountains. The sugar is flowing early in the season and wild flowers bloom toward the end of it. Summer is the busiest season of the year for the tourism industry. This is an excellent time to travel, mountain roads are open and most of the mud has dried. Average summer temperatures range around 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Fall brings the leaf lookers to see the spectacular colors of the deciduous trees. Expect to see bus loads of people enjoying the crisp fall New England weather.
