In 1971, John Phillip Greenwell, Jr. and his sister, Mary Wallace Greenwell, donated their 166.6-acre farm to the state of Maryland for use as a public park for everyone. The state subsequently purchased the adjacent 430-acre Bond property and joined the two to form the existing park.Greenwell State Park is a wonderful and scenic facility for all ages and abilities. The 600-acre park offers programs for the physically disabled through therapeutic horseback riding available through the Greenwell Foundation. The handicapped are welcome throughout the park including a trail to the boat dock, the picnic area, restrooms, hunting area, an overnight facility, and the park office.
Several miles of color-codes trails loop through the park. The trails are open year-round. Fishing the Patuxent Scenic River is available from a fishing pier or the revetment. It too, is available year-round. Maryland fishing regulations apply. Picnic areas are available but please remember that Maryland State Parks are carry-in / carry-out. Canoeing and kayaking is possible from the beach area. Swimming is permitted, however, users should be aware that the beach is non-guarded, even in the hot summer months. Seasonal hunting is permitted. The park even has a model airplane flying field. For details about the any of the recreations, call the administrating park, Point Lookout at 301-872-5688. Visitors wishing to recreate on the 500-acre public tract will find equestrian trails, hiking trails, fishing opportunities, picnic areas, hunting grounds, paddlesport waters, and non-guarded beach swimming.
Maryland has four distinct seasons with spring and fall being particularly pleasant with low humidity and mild temperatures. The average January temperature ranges between 30 and 34 degrees F (-1 to 1 C) with July averages ranging between 74 degrees F and 80 degrees F. Typically, coastal temperatures are slightly warmer then the western Appalachian Plateau area. Travelers should be aware that winters can become miserably cold and summers can be hazy, hot and humid with afternoon thundershowers.
