Located in the Western Travel Region, Big Run State Park is a relatively undeveloped parcel of 300 acres where flatwater canoeing, cross-country skiing, and rustic camping are favorites. It is located on the northern tip of Savage River Reservoir, encompassing the confluence of Monroe Run and Big Run. Administration of the park is managed by New Germany State Park, which is located several miles north. The well-known hiking trail, Monroe Run, has its trailhead in the park. In addition, anglers find success with the populations of large and smallmouth bass, walleye, crappie, channel catfish, yellow perch, brown trout, brook trout, and rainbow trout.With 300 acres in Garrett County, Big Run State Park offers rustic camping opportunities with 30 unimproved campsites and a youth group camping area. Situated at the mouth of the Savage River Reservoir, the park is 16 miles from exit 24 of Interstate 68. The park is actually surrounded by the acreage of Savage River State Forest and so visitors to the area have an even wider array of recreational opportunities with the facilities at all of these public land sites in Western Maryland. With a boat launch, Big Run is a popular base camp for outdoor-lovers intent on fishing, camping, hiking or hunting. Big Run is the trailhead for a 6-mile hiking trail, known as Monroe Run. There is a rental picnic pavilion which can accommodate 100 people available by reservation.

Maryland has four distinct seasons with spring and fall being particularly pleasant with low humidity and mild temperatures. The average January temperature ranges between 30 and 34 degrees F (-1 to 1 C) with July averages ranging between 74 degrees F and 80 degrees F. Typically, coastal temperatures are slightly warmer then the western Appalachian Plateau area. Travelers should be aware that winters can become miserably cold and summers can be hazy, hot and humid with afternoon thundershowers.
