The Nahmakanta Public Reserved Land is located in the Katahdin Region. The area total 43,000 acres of recreation land offering primitive camping, swimming, a boat launch and fishing opportunities. The large roadless Debsconeag backcountry area offers the experienced hiker the opportunity to explore a spectacular complex of low mountains and remote ponds. Snowmobiling is enjoyed during winter. The Appalachian Trail enters this region.Nahmakanta encompasses more than 43,000 acres and is the largest unit in the public reserved lands system. The Appalachian Trail crosses the unit following the shore of Nahmakanta Lake. The large roadless Debsconeag backcountry area offers the experienced hiker the opportunity to explore a spectacular complex of low mountains and remote ponds. Vehicle accessible campsites provide convenient access to scenic ponds and hiking trailheads. A popular snowmobile trail crosses the unit linking Millinocket and Greenville.

In the southern area, winter temperatures average 14 - 18 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 to -8 Celsius). Summer brings cool, pleasant breezes with temperatures in the northern area averaging 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 Celsius) and in the southern area averaging around 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 Celsius). The region receives an average of 38 - 44 inches (97 - 112 centimeters) of precipitation each year.
