Four Ponds lies just east of Mooselookmeguntic Lake between SRs 17 and 4 in the Western Mountains Region of Maine. The 6,000 acres of land are available for fishing, camping, picnicking and also snowmobiling during the winter months.Four Ponds lies just east of Mooselookmeguntic Lake in the Western Maine Mountains Region. This area is very popular with anglers, campers and long distance hikers including those trudging the Appalachian Trail. Four Ponds is a U-shaped area extending over 6,000 acres. Within its borders lay Long Pond, Moxie Pond, Round Pond, Sabbath Day Pond, Witham Bog, Swift River Pond, Little Swift River Pond and several miles of the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail. There is also an Appalachian Trail shelter located in the notch between Long Pond and Sabbath Day Pond. Just north of the reserved land is Four Ponds Mountain, rising 2,921 feet in elevation. Base elevation is approximately 2,400 feet.
Fishing, swimming, picnicking and primitive camping are popular outdoor activities within the Four Ponds Public Reserved Land. Winter visitors pass through on snowmobiles on their way from Rangeley to Weld. This gorgeous area offers expansive mountain views while providing access to the Appalachian Trail and one of its overnight shelter. Long Pond, Sabbath Day Pond and Round Pond have depths ranging 2,300 feet as a result of glacial sculpturing. Hunting and trapping are allowed, subject to certain rules. The Western Maine Mountains Region, known for its spectacular four seasons, sees average daytime winter temperatures ranging 10 - 14 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 to -10 Celsius) in the northern area and an average of 14 -18 degrees Fahrenheit (-10 to -8 Celsius) in the southern area. Summer unfolds for outdoors enthusiasts with temperatures in the northern area averaging 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 Celsius) and in the southern area averaging 68 (20 Celsius). Western Maine Mountains Region experiences a wide range of precipitation. From north to south, the area receives an average of less than 38 inches (97 centimeters) to more than 44 inches of precipitation each year. Summer rainfall averages 3 - 5 inches per month.
