Established as a memorial to U.S. veterans who served their country, Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park features a museum with uniforms, weapons, metals, and other items from the Revolutionary War through the Gulf War. Aircraft, armored vehicles and guns from World War I through Vietnam are also displayed. Near this 1,308 acre park is the Museum of Aviation. An 18-hole golf course with pro shop, a swimming beach on 7,000 acre Lake Blackshear and a conference retreat center make this park popular with both vacationers and locals. For accommodations, there are 77 tent, trailer, and RV campsites, some of which are found near the lake's edge, pioneer camping, 10 cottages, and group shelters.

Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park offers many water activities including boating, water-skiing and fishing. Private boats are permitted and fishers can expect to find bass, crappie, catfish, and bream in the waters of Lake Blackshear. Visitors will enjoy other activities such as model airplane flying, golfing, camping, picnicking, swimming, and hiking a nature trail.

Georgia has a warm climate, especially in the southern regions of the state. Expect high temperatures and humidity levels during spring and summer months. The area can offer a relatively warm escape for snow-free outdoor recreation during the winter months.
