Fort Mountain State Park derives its name from an ancient 855-foot-long rock wall which stands on the highest point of the mountain. The mysterious wall is said to have been built by Indians as a fortification against other more hostile Indians or for ancient ceremonies. This 3,428 acre park, situated in the Chattahoochee National Forest, offers a variety of outdoor activities for all to enjoy. Hikers will find some of the most beautiful trails in Georgia. Most wind through hardwood forest and blueberry thickets, occasionally crossing streams and providing spectacular vistas. During the summer, children will enjoy the sand beach located on a clear mountain lake.
Visitors will find 74 tent, trailer, and RV campsites, 15 cottages, 117 picnic tables and seven picnic shelters, a lake with a swimming beach, a miniature golf course, hiking, and mountain biking trails.
There are plenty of activities for visitors at Fort Mountain State Park. Water enthusiasts can take advantage of the boat rentals and the fishing and swimming activities at the lake. Hikers will enjoy the 64 miles of hiking trails, including an 8.2 mile backcountry trail, and mountain bikers are permitted to ride on the mountain bike trails. All visitors will enjoy the camping, picnicking, and miniature golfing facilities.
The climate in northern Georgia is generally temperate. Short, cool winters give relief from hot summers. Most visitors enjoy this area during long, mild fall and spring seasons.
