Over two thousands acres, five multi-use trails, and seven miles of beach make this visit a memorable occasion. This park is accessible by boat or ferry only which is wonderful for those who make the effort of visiting. The only noise you'll hear is an occasion plane overhead but mostly the ocean waves gently breaking on the sandy shell-strewn shores. A favorite at this park besides the solitude is the cabin community. Reservations should be made as early as possible, which is eleven months in advance.Cayo Costa State Park occupies most of an island which lies in a chain of barrier islands that shelter Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound from the storms of the Gulf of Mexico. This park is accessible only by private boat or passenger ferry services.
The natural features of the island are stunning. Miles of beaches, acres of pine forests, oak palm hammocks, mangrove swamps and a spectacular display of birdlife welcome visitors to this subtropical dreamland.
Recreational activities include picnicking, fishing, boating, primitive camping, rental cabins, and beach activities. Shelling is especially good during the winter months. No lifeguard is on duty, swim at your own risk.

The climate in southern Florida is subtropical, with mild winters and hot, wet summers. It is not unusual for temperatures to exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit with averages reaching above 83 degrees Fahrenheit (above 29 Celsius). Winters are mild and dry with temperatures averaging above 64 degrees Fahrenheit (above 18 Celsius). Yearly precipitation for the southwest area is more than 56 inches. Lightweight clothing for hot temperatures is suggested. Long sleeves, pants, sturdy shoes and bug repellent are recommended if hiking.
