Steamboat Lake is a 2,557 acre park among the mountains of the western Routt National Forest. The focal point of the park is 1,053 surface-acre Steamboat Lake, which is fed by Deep Creek, Dutch Creek, Floyd Creek, Larson Creek and Willow Creek. The elevation of the lake is above 8,000 feet.The facilities at Steamboat Lake State Park lie mostly on the northwestern shore. Three campgrounds provide 183 sites for visitors. The Sunrise Vista Campground includes 103 sites with grills, tables and water hydrants and vault toilets nearby. The Dutch Hill Campground provides tables, grills, water and vault toilets. It also has a camper services building nearby with flush toilets, showers and laundry facilities. Each site at the Bridge Island Campground has a grill, table and access to water and vault toilets.
There are three boat ramps on the lake and a full-service marina. The marina provides boat, slip and wet and dry suit rentals along with camping and fishing accessories. Placer Cove is a day-use area on the eastern shore of the lake that has an interpretive trail, boat ramp and lake access.
Most of the recreation opportunities in the park revolve around Steamboat Lake. Fishing is excellent for trout. Boaters can enjoy water skiing and sailing. (A full wet or dry suit is recommended for water-contact sports due to the cold temperature of the water.) Swimming and jet skiing are also popular at the park. Visitors will enjoy camping, picnicking, hiking, hunting, ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing within the park boundaries.
Climate conditions in Colorado should be taken seriously throughout the state. Snow and ice are common on roads and trails from mid-October through late April. In the summer months, snow is still possible but less common. Varying conditions throughout a given day can be expected throughout the year. Remember that summer days can typically have beautiful sunny mornings and short sudden thunderstorms in the afternoon. Please prepare appropriately for your outdoor experience.
