The Island Acres area of this state park is the furthermost east. It boasts four lakes (Lakes #1, #2, #3 and #4). Lakes numbered 1, 3 and 4 are open to fishing and boating; and Lake #2 is reserved for swimming. (Only non-motorized and electric-trolling motorized boats permitted.) There are three picnic areas amidst the lakes, that provide 50 picnic sites, and one campground with 60 sites, that lies north of Lake #4. A group picnic ground and dump station are also available at this site.Traveling west from Island Acres visitors will come to the Corn Lake section of Colorado River State Park. This is a day-use area that encompasses 20 acres and 15 surface acres of water. Corn Lake supports picnicking, fishing and hiking opportunities and includes a pier that is wheelchair accessible. The lake is stocked with bass, trout, bluegill, catfish and crappie. A one and a half mile trail leads west and accesses the Colorado River Wildlife Area.
On D Road a short distance west of Corn Lake lies the Colorado River Wildlife Area. The area is a haven for bird watchers and it supports these species: blue heron, hawks, owls, eagles and geese. Fishing is good on the river and a large parking lot provides access for plenty of visitors. Restrooms, picnic sites and interpretive kiosks are facilities included in this part of the park.
Connected Lakes is the western most section of the park. The focus of the park is four lakes that are filled by seepage from the Colorado River. A boat ramp in this area provides access to the river and non-motorized boating is permitted on the lakes. The facilities include paved trails, gravel walkways, interpretive panels, concrete fishing piers and picnic sites.
Visitors to this park can enjoy picnicking, swimming, bird watching, fishing, hiking, boating and camping at several locations.
Grand Junctions climate is balmy compared to the mountainous central regions of the state. The low elevation, 4,590 feet, allows for warm air temperatures, which combined with the dry climate, create mostly sunny and warm days throughout the year. The summer temperatures can be brutal; reaching the mid-nineties frequently. Winter temperatures are usually mild, but occasional cold weather and snowstorms do occur.
