Barbour Ponds State Park encompasses 50 acres with 80 surface acres. The lakes support trout, catfish, crappie, bass and bluegill. Visitors can fish in a quiet, prairie-like setting with views of Longs Peak and Mount Meeker. There are three fishing piers accessible by wheelchair throughout the park.

Surrounding the lakes are 60 campsites that include tables and grills. A dump station and picnic facilities are also available on site. A short nature trail and guided nature walks provide information about the environment and wildlife of the park. This facility is open year-round.

Most visitors to Barbour State Park participate in camping, picnicking and fishing activities. The facilities within the park focus on these activities. No-wake boating, bird watching and nature photography are also popular during the spring, summer and fall. During the winter months visitors enjoy ice fishing, ice skating and cross-country skiing.

This region has a pleasant climate that is relatively mild. The high elevation and nearness to the mountains keeps the temperatures from soaring during the summer months, although, heat waves do occur. The winter months bring some snow and an occasional cold snap, but usually the temperatures reach the 40s during the day.
