From 1869 to 1963, Powhatan served as county seat of western Lawrence County. During the mid 1800s, the town was a busy river port shipping "mother of pearl" button blanks worldwide. In 1888, a stately two-story courthouse with delicate woodwork and a classic Victorian cupola was built from red bricks made on-site. Restored in 1970, the courthouse is a regional archive containing some of the oldest records in Arkansas, many of which predate statehood. Exhibits interpret the rich history of technology, politics and life styles that shaped north Arkansas.Powhatan Courthouse State Park offers tours of the restored courthouse.
Arkansas has a temperate climate with the coldest temperatures near freezing during December, January and February. Daytime highs for these months usually reach 55 degrees F. Spring and fall temperatures are very mild with lows dipping to 44 degrees F and highs reaching 70 degrees F. July and August are the hottest months of the year with average temperatures reaching 90 degrees F. June and September average temperatures usually reach into the mid-eighties. Spring and winter months are the wettest of the year.
