At 400 feet wide Tonto Natural Bridge is the world's largest natural travertine bridge. Located in central Arizona, it arches 183 feet above sparkling Pine Creek. Visitors can stand on top of the bridge or hike down below to capture the true size and beauty of this geologic wonder. Flowing springs and fern draped grottos line the narrow canyon upstream. In a large grassy meadow above the bridge, a restored turn-of-the-century hotel provides a peek at an earlier time. Facilities at the park include the historic lodge, picnic tables, grills, trails, restrooms a group use area and gift shop. The restrooms are handicapped accessible.
Recreational opportunities offered at this 160 acre site include hiking, viewing scenery and nature and picnicking.
The State Park has a high elevation of 4,500 feet and as such does not experience the harsh desert climate of low elevation sites. However, during the summer months visitors can still expect very hot temperatures with afternoon thunderstorms possible especially in July and August. Daytime high temperatures can exceed 95 degrees. Winter brings moderate temperatures, with cool days and cool to cold nights. Winter is a good time to experience these normally snow free areas. Fall and spring are transitional periods and can also be nice times to visit these desert regions. Be prepared for cool temperatures at higher elevations and dress in layers for your travels in this state of varying climates.
