Slide Rock State Park is nestled in lush Oak Creek Canyon and takes its name from a 30 foot long water slide worn in the rocks of the creekbed. The 65 degree water provides a cool respite from even the hottest summer day, but be prepared with water shoes and a pair of sturdy shorts for sliding down this slippery rock. The park sits the old Pendley homestead where an irrigation system completed in 1912 for his growing apple orchard is still in use today. There are 13 varieties of apples grown on the site. The harvesting of the apples takes place in September and October. Apple blossom time arrives in mid-April.
In addition to the natural water slide, park facilities include a volleyball court, market, picnic tables, grills, trails and restrooms.
Recreational opportunities offered at Slide Rock include, sliding on the natural water slide, swimming, hiking, picnicking, fishing, and viewing scenery.
Slide Rock has a high elevation of 4,930 feet and does not experience the harsh desert climate of low elevation sites. However, during the summer months visitors can still expect hot temperatures with afternoon thunderstorms possible especially in July and August. Daytime high temperatures can exceed 100 degrees. Winter brings moderate temperatures, with cool days and cool to cold nights. Fall and spring are transitional periods and can also be nice times to visit these desert regions. Be prepared for cool temperatures at higher elevations and dress in layers for your travels in this state of varying climates.
