Grafton State Forest offers 203 acres of remote undeveloped land in south-central Vermont. Primitive camping, hiking and hunting are available. A few miles east is the town of Grafton which offers sights of the historic Kidder Hill Covered Bridge. Also, the Grafton Ponds area is well-known for cross-country skiing.Grafton State Forest lies in the southern area of Vermont just minutes away from the lovely town of Grafton and Cambridgeport. It is nestled between Burt Hill, Spring Hill, Bull Hill and Bear Hill. The Grafton Ponds area offers wonderful cross-country skiing on many of the area trails which often begin at the end of a gravel road. WC Putnam is another small state forest located just north of SR 121 offering a hiking trail to Blake Hill, elevation 1,700 feet. Dorand and Williams River State Forests are also nearby.
Located along the west bank of Saxton River, Grafton State Forest offers limited recreation. Primitive camping, hiking, hunting and cross-country skiing are enjoyed.
Winter daytime temperatures average above 18 degrees Fahrenheit (above -8 Celsius). Summer daytime temperatures average above 70 degrees Fahrenheit (above 21 Celsius). Much of the state's precipitation is the result of snow, particularly throughout the mountains. The Places in History Travel Region has an average precipitation of more than 44 inches (more than 112 centimeters). However, along the eastern boundary of this region, precipitation drops between 36 and 40 inches (91 to 102 centimeters).
