This State Beach lies protected within Monterey Bay between the mouth of the Salinas River and the community of Moss Landing. It preserves one of the region's most interesting sand dune formations. This park is home to many species of wild birds, including Western meadowlarks, hawks, jays, valley quail, finches, towhees and sparrows. Shore birds that winter along the bay can also be found on the dunes of Salinas River State Park.

Access to the calm waters of Monterey Bay make this park a popular place for fishing. Bird watching and beachcombing are also popular pursuits at Salinas River State Beach.

The Climate of the Central Coast varies greatly. At this State Beach you can expect moderate temperatures year round with fog likely from June through mid-August. Visiting during the late summer or fall ensures the best conditions for viewing scenery. Occasional clear days between winter and spring storms do occur. Throughout the state of California most precipitation occurs in the winter months as rain. The months from April through October are usually very dry.
