Reservations and room requests

I placed my reservation for a special event during Sept. 2007, and requested a smoking room, and there were options to select a smoking or non-smoking room. I was told that, at that time, there were no smoking rooms available, but there could be cancellations. Two days later, I called with my confirmation number and told I was "Confirmed" for a smoking room. Not sure at this point, I called the following day, at a different time of day, and was told there were no smoking rooms available, and perhaps this is a non smoking hotel, and a balcony room would be requested, if available. This really concerned me, so I called the hotel main number again this time selected an operatior instead of reservations. I asked the operator if the Hilton Americas is a non-smoking hotel, and the response was YES!
I feel that there is definitely a communication problem with the staff and the prospective clients.
I cannot reply to much of the star options, since the date has not yet arrived.
