Already making plans to return!

We stayed in the Fiesta Americana and were very happy with it. This was my first time to Cozumel, but my companions fourth, and we had a great time! We stayed 10 days at the FA, but we did not do the all-inclusive package since we didnt want to be tied to the hotel for everything.
The hotel is listed as 4 or 5 stars because the ratings compare it to other hotels in the area. On US standards, it is probably on par with nicer Holiday Inn and Baymont style hotels.
We stayed in a Casita, which are found in a complex of buildings on the inland side, just next to the hotel itself. It is a very short walk to the rest of the complex, and the setting was very nice. The jungle took a beating from Hurricane Wilma and is recovering, so dont expect a lot of trees around the hotel. The vegetation that is there is very nice, however. The casitas are sort of like 4-unit condos, and our room was great. The air worked wonderfully, the bed was firm (I wouldnt call it hard, but it was definitely more firm generally than beds in the US, but I had no trouble sleeping on it), and the bathroom was huge.
The staff was all very friendly to us, and even the maintenance guys planting new trees and flowers always smiled and said hola! to us every day. When I left the dome light on accidentally in the rental car and woke up with a dead battery, the staff went out of their way to track down a set of jumper cables to get us going again. I never felt uncomfortable about leaving things in the room. When we checked out, we had a couple of clothing items we wanted to leave behind for the maid, and the bellhop said we needed to leave a note giving her permission to accept them.
Everything was clean. The sewage odor that some people mentioned did show up twice in the 10 days we stayed, but it was faint and only noticeable in one small area outside. It was the water treatment equipment causing it, and I didnt mind the minor inconvenience to know that the hotel had good water. I drank from the tap several times and felt no ill effects at all.
The beach is completely done: lots of sand, hammocks, chairs, and nice easy access to the water for some great snorkeling. Nearby is Dzul Ha, another great place for snorkeling (and good fajitas!), and just to the south is the national park Chankanaab.
We rented a car the whole time there, and the FA served as an excellent base of operations. The town is just a few minutes to the north, and it was great fun to jump on the main road and drive all over the island. There are nice little beaches everywhere, and on the eastern side (the wild side) there are several more beaches and beach bars to stop for drinks and food. Stop at Bob Marley's! To the north, there is a gas station on the way into town.
We found the local store, Charraudi, which is like a super Wal-Mart. We bought a cooler and loaded up on food, drinks, and bottled water. It is very inexpensive to live that way, and I recommend it. The bakery was WONDERFUL! For dinners, we ate in town a lot, and did not go broke from it. Prices are very reasonable and the food was excellent (especially at Plaza Leza).
The FA has no night life aside from the bar, but that is just fine. We appreciated the quiet, and when we wanted to party, we went into town anyway.
There is a computer in the lobby for internet access, if you just can't stand to be away from it! Oh, and if you don't use the safe then tell them when you check out and they will deduct the $1.00 a day charge for it.
We will definitely stay at the FA the next time, and rent a car again. The freedom is worth it, and it really makes the island experience that much better. Be careful at dusk when the land crabs come out across the road, though! They are a riot.
