Disgusting less than one star!!!

We booked this hotel on our way back from Las Vegas to Kansas. We were tired and it was getting late so we did an unpublished booking through Expedia. Not a big deal, as we do these types of bookings once or twice a month. When they revealed the hotel name and it was not a chain hotel, I was a little concerned. I looked up their website and it looked nice so I was slightly relieved.
Then we arrived. From the moment I saw the parking lot, I was concerned. It only went downhill from there! All I can say is the person who took their photos and designed their website should either get an award for making a turd look polished or a fine for false advertising. The photos and description do not depict the REAL hotel.
Upon entering the parking lot, the broken neon lights were a first concern. The lobby was small and the smell was not appealing. When the elevator opened to take us to the fourth floor room, there were broken tiles on the floor, broken covers over the lights and just a plain dirty elevator.
Upon reaching our floor the smell of cigarette smoke overwhelmed us and we booked a non-smoking room. At our door, there were holes and patches. The room itself was filled with the smell of smoke and was hardly big enough for the furniture it held. It was so dirty I refused to take off my socks.
This hotel states very eloquently on the website that
"The Plaza Inn Albuquerque, New Mexico is a full service, AAA three-diamond, newly refurbished Albuquerque hotel located amid top attractions and events.
We understand, people who travel regularly expect a certain level of styling and services from hotels and it’s our goal to deliver. You’ll find our hotel in Albuquerque offers well defined, comfortable, accommodations delivered with attentive service."
None of these things hold true for this hotel, so when the management comes on Trip Advisor to state they aren't trying to be something they are not, I'd like to know what exactly they think their website is trying to portray. I wasn't looking for upscale, I was looking for clean and accommodating and on a par with a Courtyard by Marriott or a Holiday Inn Express. This hotel was not well defined, nor was it comfortable and I saw no signs of it being newly refurbished.
The fact is this hotel is dirty, outdated, and loud. The rooms are tiny, the furniture overfills the space. The old 1970s style walnut laminate doors and trimmings only added to the poorly defined room. Nasty curtains, a deck door that leaked air and noise was finished off my first impression.
We did wind up staying here because Expedia could not refund our money on an unpublished deal. They did make the situation right for us in another way so I applaud Expedia’s customer service! We decided to try to sleep because the sheets seemed clean. However, there was disgusting brown blanket on the bed that has probably been in their inventory since the 1970s. It was rough and over-washed which made the bed feel dirty.
Beyond all of these things, we often heard people in rooms and halls around us. And on two occasions someone actually tried to open our door, which was concerning.
Overall, I think this hotel needs a downgrading from all the websites. It has been the most disappointing hotel I have stayed in. And the price was not overly cheap compared to others which are also 3 star hotels. I would not have been happy here even if I paid $30 a night because there is no excuse for dirty accommodations.
I say to the owners of this hotel...market it as it is or spend the money to make it actually what you are trying to portray it as. Clean it up, actually refurbish it and then your product will speak for itself and you won't have to keep coming to this website to defend it. I have stayed in hotels about 30 times this year alone and the condition of this property is indefensible. A two star rating would be too generous for it based on our experience!
I say beware!
