Good Room In A Motel Ruined By Bad Management
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/23/10
This used to be a Colonial Inn, as evidenced by decorative glass doors, ruffled curtains and upholstered seating areas. The current owners also have the Best Western across the street (which on my last stay was not good) and a couple of motels elsewhere in the area. When it was the Colonial my visit was very nice. Every time since then has been less so. This time was terrible in several ways.
First, let me say that the people at the counter were pleasant and helpful, all things considered, in spite of some initial language difficulties (just a bit hard to understand). They did what they could, but they were victims of the horrible environment as much as I was.
1.) The lobby, hallways and other common areas, including the eating areas, were not air conditioned. I checked it with a clock/thermometer--94 degrees. It was stifling in the morning and sickeningly hot the rest of the time.
2. There was an unbelievably bad odor permeating the hallway, eating area into the lobby and seeping into the room any time I opened the door. Apparently the week before, some water leaked from the ice machine into the carpet and in the process of drying, created a mildewed odor that can only be compared to cat urine--it was that bad.
There were only two other guests and I saw one of them in the parking lot in the morning as I was leaving. He walked out the door, took a breath and said he had been holding his breath since he checked in. He said he was there while working on a construction job but would drive from Winfield in the future. (I will too.)
3.) My room was 88 degrees when I arrived. It had been 100 degrees outside and the air conditioner was turned off. I don't expect motels to keep every room chilled, but when you only have a few guests it would seem you could keep three or four at a semi-comfortable temperature.
4.) Wireless Internet was limited and many times my email would time out while trying to send a message. I was told it is better in some areas than others.
5.) There is a computer in the main area--which I thought I would use since I couldn't get out on my laptop. But, the monitor has a sign saying it was out of service--and the sign looked old.
6.) The pop machine wasn't working, which probably didn't matter since the odor in that area was intolerable. Oh my gosh! And there was an old wet towel laying in the middle of the floor, which was even worse.
Those were the problems. My room was generally clean...the bathroom was very clean. There were crumbs and shreds of paper between the beds and the nightstand, indicating it hadn't been vacuumed after the last guest or maybe several guests. The shower worked well and water was very hot.
What saved my stay was Bath and Body Works! I used the room spray liberally, showered with fragranced shower soap and filled the bathtub and sink with hot water and fragranced bath gel, then put lotion on my hands and slept with my hands next to my face.
What is most frustrating to me is that this could be a good motel. It started out great. I realize profits are small anyway, but this motel could be much more profitable if management would invest in it.
I know I won't be staying in it again. I'll look at the Comfort Inn or Super Eight in Winfield, instead. It's just too risky for a room that is $95.
