I would say the people who want the Sves to "get with the times", should probably go elsewhere (maybe to one of those resorts they can find online). Those people probably aren't the type the Sves need there anyway. There are enough of us who love the place so much that we book a year in advance and come back year after year. (and from what I can tell, they're almost always booked)
I don't need modern amenities because that's not why I go there. If I need something I can just walk over and talk to Eric. I think the Sves know what they're doing, and that there are those of us who really appreciate their pace. Can't wait to be there again!
The cabin was spotless like always! Garbage picked up every day. When I mentioned to Eric I had to buy a jacket because I forgot how chilly it can get right by the lake, he immediately brought me one down from his house! How sweet and kind is that? Can't wait to get back there!
If it is the kind of place that is behind the times, that is where we want to be. The world needs to slow down and back up and leave all the business behind them. Families need to feel what yesteryear is like. Pretty soon everything will be paved or sprayed. I say keep it up Sve's!!! We stopped just to view the view and the cabins are just feet from the waters edge. that in itself is not heard of anymore and worth every penney.
The cabins are not well kept. The floors and windows are dirty. The carpet in the cabin in which we stayed was filthy! The furnishings are run-down and dirty. It's impossible to get intouch with the management - no one ever answers the phone, theres no answering machine or service, and no e-mail!
The setting is beautiful but the resort seems to be poorly managed
We won't go back!
Our family has been staying at Split Rock Cabins for over 40 years.
Both Walter & Eric have always provided the Norwegian tradition of hospitality. Prices have remained a good value compared to the other cabin resorts along the shore, and you can't beat the location ! Some upgrades would be nice to see, like Queen size beds (instead of Full), microwave's, stuff like that. And I agree with others that there should be a website with a phone number (so at least a message can be left on an answering machine/voice mail or e-mail response), pictures, pricing, etc., so travelers can inquire about the resort. We have a ton of great memories here over the years that will always be remembered.
The Sve's have been running these cabins for ages. Those who complain about the cabins being in the stone ages or whatever just don't know what they are talking about. I am related to the Sve's, and still have to book literally years in advance. They don't advertise because they don't need to. They rarely have a vacancy, so advertising is a waste of time.
However, if you can get a reservation, it is the most peaceful, wonderful vacation, and the Sve's provide a great service.
Split Rock Cabins are so far behind the times. They do not have the ammenities available at many other resorts along the shore. The Sve's never answer their phone and they are not advertised on the internet like all the other resorts. They need to move up with the times and quit being such cheap skates at the way they run their resort.
It is impossible to get ahold of anyone at Split Rock Cabins to make a reservation. They do not have an answering machine to take messages and they are never there to answer the phone. They do not have a website showing what is available at their cabins, as well as prices. They do not even have a brochure. Do not waste your money on this place. They are still running things like in the stone ages. Who wants to go someplace where you cannot see what you are renting until you arrive. That's poor business if you ask me!
Various members of our family have been staying here for a week every fall for a couple of decades. The Sve family operates the cabins and a herring fishery in the Olde Norwegian Tradition. The cabins are pristine and spotless. The hospitality is graceful and way beyond the norm. We look forward to this week every year.
There are many activities nearby. We hike, fish, watch the Fall colors, hunt grouse, make art out of nature, make s'mores, visit with the Sve's, take a four wheel trip, visit the myriad shops and restaurants along the shore, fish Lake Superior, take scenic airplane rides, pick fall berries and mushrooms, hang out at the cabin, watch the huge waves roll in, watch the moose and deer and, on occasion, revel in the Northern Lights.
And we do a lot of other stuff. Our grandkids love the place.
You will be blessed to find an opening.
