Tradition Shattered
By ,
When I was little my parents used to bring me here. Some of the best memories I have of being a kid are of our vacations to Wihega. I still wear a hat and a sweat shirt of theirs. The old owners- Ken and Marion- were like the best set of grandparents a kid could ever have. They always had a smile for you. Ken taught me how to fish and ski. Marion would invite you into her home for treats. My picture was on the wall many times for the fish I caught. I dreamed of having my wedding on the beach there some day. In 2002 Sue and Dan took over. There was an immediate change in the atmoshere. It was clear, right from the very start, that Sue was not a "people" person. I agree with one of the other posters- why would someone who is not good with people buy a resort? By that time I was renting a cottage on my own and my son had gotten the benefit of the wonderful memories too. My parents still rented a cottage as well. 3 generations were going up the same week of the same month every year together. For the poster who said those of us who were coming for years could'nt handle the rules- you are wrong. How do you explain this? My mother is the CLEANEST person- back then she was OCD clean. When we ended our week- I left my cabin in fairly decent shape. My mother left hers immaculate as always, yet she received a nasty letter from Sue stating it wasnt up to her standards. While my mother wasnt told she couldnt come back, she was offended enough to refuse to go the next year. After two years of their ownership and Sue's blatant rudeness, we all stopped going. We were not rowdy, or untidy, nor did we park in the wrong spots. Bottom line- If Sue doesnt like you for whatever reason, your stay will be unpleasant. I am 39 years old now and still dream of Wihega. I have a three year old daughter I would love to be able to take there and allow her to build the memories my family has. But as long as things remain the way they are (especially so kid unfriendly) that will never happen. Sue and Dan, I hope you read this because I would just like to say to you- you messed up one of the best family resorts I've ever been to. You have taken away a family tradition and tainted memories for many families and I dont know how you sleep at night. I hope people boycott your resort so you will either change your ways or sell the resort to people who actually enjoy being resort owners and restore the place to it's former glory. You made cosmetic improvements to the cabins, but destroyed the social atmoshphere entirely. Shame on you! UPDATE- For the person who said it is "Might be you that is the problem" CLEARLY it is not because there are many others who complained about the same things!!! It is not the "rules" that were the problem. The place is no longer kid friendly or pet friendly and Sue is not friendly in general. There are other places just as nice and clean at BETTER prices and offer much better service!

51 More Weeks Till We Go BACK
By ,
Another GREAT time at The Wihega Lodge. To bad me and the family can't make this GREAT time of our lifes for TWO WEEKS. I have to wait another 51 weeks till we get to go back. My two sons their friends and my Grandson enjoy everything that Dan & Sue have to offer. I think its been 11 years from when thet took over from Ken & Marion changes have been made and up dates were done all were for the better. If some people don't understand that with new owners come new ideas to bad for them glad they decided to move on. My family and I believe they were made for the best and for all. Did I forget to mention nothing better than watch a 3-1/2 year old bring in a big perch and his new rod & reel saying Grandpa I can't reel it in. Fishing great for kids may not always be the biggest but you will catch fish and they all clean up and taste good come Dec. / Jan. If you need to rent a motor while you are their they have them I have never had any bad luck with the ones that they offer after a one time choke it in the morning they will start within 2-3 pulls all day. The Lodge is a great place to go after the day on the lake or just resting on the beach with the kids nice selection of beer which is always cold and goes good with the pizza that you can order at the bar. The lake is very clean spring feed and the weed growth is not a problem. Lots of pan fish and plenty of bass with a few walleye. Dan can and always does help you out where they might be. Fishing off the pier at night is always good on them quite nights. The cottages are very clean with some changes added to some every year. Hope I was able to give everybody a little input on Wihega Lodge located on Little Spider Lake check them out its a great plcae to take the family. Musky fishermen never caught one but have seen some big ones they are their as always right place right time. Good Luck Enjoy Brian

Original owners - William & Helen Gantner
By ,
I can remember over 40 years ago when Bill & Helen founded and operated the resort. It was a real fun place to vacation because the bar was open every evening, most customers were repeaters, fishing was so so except for big muskies in Wilson and Stieners Thunderbird Bay. Our last vacation was in 1967 with several visits during the 90's for old time sake. As usual, things never seem to improve with old times and Wihega Lodge is no exception. I wll always remember the good old days in the 50's and 60's with nothing but joy and happiness!!! PS: Bill & Helen built a private cabin in the late 40's but friends kept wanting to visit because of the fishing and pretty lake. They started a resort by building a new cabin every year untill about 1953. The cabins were built by William and a bachelor named Bill Kubnick who lived in the back bay beyond the narrows. Because of the wonderful times at WIHEGA, I moved my family from Chicago to Wisconsin in 1969 and live in Williams Bay on Lake Geneva..

grumpy owners
By ,
I have been comming to Whiega for over 49 years, I have a few things things to say about the Resort. iThink it extremely sad that the sounds of kids playing and fishing and family's just enjoying each others company does not seem to be happening at this resort anymore. The owners wife Sue seems like she hates everybody and seems like drill Sargent or prison guard....she runs the show by of that resort by all means, her hubbie just stands back Like a little kid. They Hate pets and there rules are crazy, after all your on vacation not probation. I was just at the lake about 10 minutes ago without a vistor in sight....no laughs or kids playing...The cottages are still the way there were 40 years ago except a little paint and maybe some minor and I mean minor upgrades. I'm wondering what happened to the kids games and spaghetti dinners and fish frys and popcorn for all the guest" oh I forgot it cost for those things" where the horseback riding maybe on the wooden horse out front, and for golf um maybe 25 minutes yep and that cost....and dont ask a friend or he better bring his wallet...so if your looking for a prison camp and parking wars then this is your place. happy vacation !

Relaxing Vacation Time
By ,
This has been our 4th trip to Wihega Resort. We love to watch the eagles, loons, deer and other wildlife at and around Little Spider Lake. Dan and Sue are great hosts and make you feel very welcome. If you need anything they are most gracious in helping. The cabins are clean and spacious. The other guests during our stay were friendly and everyone seems very considerate of each other. A great place for a relaxing vacation. As I said, Sue and Dan are great hosts.

For fifty years
By ,
Whats not to like? I read a lot of the comments about Wihega and I think its just a few spoiled apples that went up when Ken (Bobber) and Marion were owners. Got used to having no rules to speak of and basically ran the place for that week. Sure Ken was always around, I never saw a fish he couldnt filet.....I saw a two incher once. But by know means did they do any upkeep of the cabins. How many nights did the bottles going down the shoot keep you up at night? So Sue and Dan have cleaned the place up and with that came growing pains it seems......trust me, they have done wonders with the cabins, with what were given. So dont blame themfor what Bobber and Marion created......If you want to see them, they live just up the road on Wihega. Your tradition was not lost. Wihega is better that it has been in a long time......I will leave you with this...... Every year now, I have spent fifty summers on Lil Spider I go up to the lodge now and can have that drink, the same place where I used to love the frozen candy bars and run back down to the beach....of course letting the lodge door slam and then hearing Bill yell out the lodge window, dont slam the door......I can go up to the lodge and see and remember through old pictures the smiles my father and grandfather had on there faces from Wihega....I can go up to the lodge and share these stories with new friends and make new stories to share the following year. So if you want to give up on wihega SHAME ON YOU for not sharing a lifetime of memories for your kids to share with their kids on their summer home. I say come back and see what they have done......Sue and Dan have been nothing than great to me, as were Bill and Eleanor, that one family for a couple of years to Bobber and Marion.....each were involved with making my 50 years on Lil Spider filled with memories. And yes I will make it for 51 years now. Now to the review.....the cabins are clean and the grounds very clean. The water in June is slightly cold, it wont stop me from swimming to the raft....oh wait it does. The eagles soared this past year and I watched four loons take there first swim.....I didnt catch Moe, but it wont stop me from trying. The company at the lodge was fantastic as it is every year. So if its a fun filled trip to the Northwoods, I would check out Wihega, I have for 50 years.

we'll be back
By ,
Very nice people, good lake, clean property. The equipment (boat and motor) were good. It really was nice. All the cabins were filled with repeat visitors, which says something in itself.

Wonderful Vacation , Beautiful Location
By ,
We stayed for 5 nights in early September, and the location was gorgeous and the lodge was peaceful, well-cared for, and comfortable. We rented 2 cabins, one for me and my husband, and one for my husband's mom. I was very worried that Mom, who is 86 years old, very exacting, and has some trouble getting around, would hate it and want to go home right away. Fortunately, she said it was suprisingly nice and especially liked the fact that the lake itself was only a few steps from her cabin,[ with no stairs! ] The only thing she complained about was the light in the bathroom wasn't bright enough to put on her make-up [Cabin 2], and she couldn't figure out the TV channels[she has cable at home]. She couldn't manage the rowboat, so we rented their nice pontoon boat. She just stepped aboard from the dock, with no trouble. We dearly wanted to go back again in early October, [including Mom!], but there is a family wedding intervening. We will definitely go back there next year, and for many years to come! ...Oh--and Mom caught her first bass! [and her second, and third, and fourth...!!!] Thank you, Sue and Dan!

Not Happy
By ,
What a beautiful lake and the resort cabins are satisfactory, but i don't understand the point of having a resort bar if you rarely open it. And when the bar is open the owners don't exactly make you feel very welcome, it's like they are just waiting for everyone to get out so they can close. Nice place but not kid friendly or adult friendly for that matter.
