Ok folks, here's my review of Vechells Resort and Drummond Island.... Vechells proprietress, Alvira is a sweetheart, you couldn't ask for a nicer person. The cabins are older, 60's I would say, nothing fancy. But, they were clean inside and no musty oders. If you looking for a Holiday Inn, that it isn't , but its a place you can bed down for a whole lot cheaper than the high end resorts. The beds are a little hard so I recommend bringing a foam cushion for the top if you have Back issues. No moldy bathrooms or hairs in the sink, it was clean! Bring your own towels, bedding is supplied. The shower pressure was a little low, but plenty of good hot water for showers. Hey, what can I say, it's an older resort. Would I come back? You bet!! My wife and I stayed for 3 nights celebrating our 32nd anniversary. We had a vantastic time on the island, an excellent place to set back and get away from the rat race. The fishing was excellent according to those that fish, I haven't fished in years. We just wanted to enjoy the great out doors the good Lord created. The best part was, we got to meet Alvira.........
As the host Elvira says "It ain't no Taj Mahal" but the cabins are clean and neat, the fireplace's all have wood provided. There is a pontoon to rent and the view is amazing. You can stay down the street for 3500 a week or at Vechells for less than $500 or so.
There are ten cabins and a nice boat launch. A small wading area for kids and if you bring your bikes, you can bike on all paved roads and see deer, wildflowers, small streams, a small pond and all sorts of wildlife all within biking distance of a 4 year old.
Drummond has wonderful fishing, hunting, the drive to fossil beach in a 4 x 4 or to big schoal beach is lovely. If you love peace and quiet and nature, this is the place for you. The island has a few nice gift shops and you can park at the ferry and ride over to DeTour for a nice day looking at the shops there.
Call Elvira and make your reservations for 2009 you will love the trip.
Alvira was a very funny and friendly hostess, a real sweatheart. Cabin warm [fireplace]and comfy. Very clean and we had every thing we could need. Pretty view from cabin. Loved every min. Great location too, close to every thing we wanted to explore.
