Beautiful Resort with Spectacular Views
By ,
My husband and I have been visiting Houghton Lake for nearly 20 years, staying at a variety of locations. Marsee's Landing is the best kept secret! The land is well kept and the cabins are immaculate. The cable TV was a nice bonus this year. The land is spacious and the view of the lake (especially the sunset) can't be beat. The resort is secluded enough to offer much needed R&R, but still just a few minute drive from town. We're definitely coming back.

Don't make a mess
By ,
We had booked all but one or all of these cottages for the last five years, even filling with our friends for one year that we could not make it. We are one family with lots of parents and children. This means we have spent over $20,000 vactioning here but no more. The first night of our last stay there the children were of course very excited and running and playing basketball, swinging on the swings and generally having a good time. This is when we saw our host for the first time since she took the checks and we are informed that there is a curfew and the kids need to be in the cabins. She says that she has received calls from her neighbors complaining but the houses on both sides were empty. (Fairly upset) When we were leaving, which was the next time we saw our host, we are told that one of the cheap plasic lawn chairs was missing and $20 would be taken from our security deposit. What did she think we had done with the chair? Stolen it? Sold it? I can't even imagine. When we suggested that it may have blown into the lake it made no difference. We were liable. So they were not satisfied with the $4,000.00 that we spend to stay there for the week and appently thought she deserved to profit another $12.00 on the chair replacement. (Upset) Next she finds that there are two lines drawn in crayon on the porch siding and this was going to cost us even more more of our deposit. While she calculated the amount in her head one of us took a damp paper towel, wiped and made it new again. She seemed disappointed that she would not be able to pocket some more of our deposit. (Very upset) Then she discovered that there was a tear in the screen of one of the bedroom windows. I do not know where this came from or when it was done because I had neglected to to THAT thorough of an inpection. This would cost us the entire deposit for one of the cottages. I would estimate that I could replace all of the screens on all of the windows on all of the cottages for the money we lost. This for a screen that had a 2 inch tear in the corner that I do not know who did it or when it was done. (Now I am mad) I cannot say whether they care or not but they have lost us as customers forever. The cottages are average and the veiw is nice but they have the hopitality of Basil Fawlty and you should inculde you deposit in the price when considering this place. Good luck.
